“It takes a community to raise a child”: why Nancy volunteers
For Nancy Chiu, volunteering is about staying connected. To her community, to local health care, and to something bigger than herself.
An Island Health employee for nearly 18 years, Nancy has spent much of her career supporting patients and staff across Vancouver Island.
When she began volunteering with Children’s Health Foundation of Vancouver Island in late 2023, it felt like a natural extension of that work.
“This really resonated with me,” she says. “Both my girls were delivered at Victoria General Hospital, and my family has used services supported by the Foundation.”
Nancy is involved in a wide range of community organizations, but her connection to children’s health is especially meaningful. She understands how important it is for families to feel supported, especially when navigating complex medical needs.
“We should never take health for granted,” she says. “It takes a community to raise a child.”
At Foundation events like Pancakes & Pajamas and 50/50 sales at Victoria Royals games, Nancy is often one of the first people to greet families. She’s known for going all out in festive outfits.
“I usually dress up,” she says. “It’s kind of become a tradition.”
But beyond the fun, what stays with her are the small, human moments. After years in frontline administrative roles, Nancy now works from home, and volunteering has helped fill that gap in connection.
“There’s a bit of a social disconnect,” she explains. “This helps me feel connected to the community again.”
For Nancy, giving back is also about perspective. While she contributes financially when she can, she sees her time and energy as just as valuable.
“If I can’t give as much as I’d like, I can still give my time,” she says. “That matters, too.”
