Designing a more accessible world
For aspiring interior designer Pyper, the future is filled with possibility.
Heading into her final year of Northern Alberta Institute of Technology’s Interior Design Technology program, Pyper is turning her passion for accessibility and inclusive design into a career. And support from the Lisa Huus Bursary is making that journey possible.
Created to support youth with disabilities to access post-secondary education, the bursary has provided more than financial assistance for Pyper. It has opened up a world of opportunity.
Pyper’s interest in design stems from childhood, where she spent hours watching design shows on HGTV and imagining how spaces could shape people’s experiences.
“What I love most about it is the balance between creativity and functionality, especially the opportunity to design spaces that are accessible and inclusive for everyone,” Pyper explains. “I believe there is a real need for more designers who prioritize accessibility.”
This is deeply personal for Pyper. Navigating the world with limited mobility has given her firsthand insight into how design can either create barriers or remove them. It has also shaped her appreciation for adaptive recreation, from kayaking and hiking, which she enjoys with her mom and her dog, Bear.
The support of the Lisa Huus Bursary has helped ease the financial pressures of pursuing an education while living with a disability.
“Realistically, I wouldn’t have been able to pursue post-secondary education without this support. It has allowed me to prioritize both my schoolwork and my health.”
Pyper’s experience is proof that when young people living with disabilities are supported to pursue their goals, the sky is the limit. Because we need voices like Pyper’s at the table helping to shape our communities.
