Denver’s steady strength: a family’s journey through childhood cancer
Sixteen-year-old Denver is artistic and creative, and will try almost any new craft at least once. She lives in Sooke and has always been the kind of kid who keeps going without making a fuss.
“She’s super strong,” said Denver’s mom, Dana. “I’ve watched her go through so much with such grace.”
When Denver was diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL), she felt completely fine. A routine blood test came back abnormal, but she had no symptoms beyond being a little pale—something the family attributed to a summer spent mostly indoors.
Denver started chemotherapy, spinal taps, and a long medication schedule, which she handled with remarkable composure. The family travelled back and forth between Sooke and BC Children’s Hospital in Vancouver, sometimes weekly, for Denver’s procedures. Managing that much travel and time away from home took a toll on the whole family.
Our Bear Essentials program provided financial support for meals, groceries, and travel costs, allowing the family to focus on Denver’s care.
“Bear Essentials helped immensely,” Dana shared. “It wasn’t just about the money—it was about being able to breathe a little and know that we could get through this without constantly panicking about bills or meals.”
One moment captured Denver’s spirit perfectly. With her immune system still fragile, doctors encouraged her to skip prom. Denver listened—and then, quietly, made her own choice.
“She was like, ‘I’m going to prom. Look at the dress,’” Dana remembers. That night, Denver went, danced, and soaked up every moment—a small but meaningful return to being a teenager.
Reflecting on the journey, Dana emphasizes both the supports they received as well as the challenges.
“The hospital nurses, and social workers are super amazing and supportive. Life and bills still exist once you come home, but Bear Essentials really helped us manage financially while we focused on Denver’s health.”
