Why we give: The Gosselins’ story

For Penny and Roger Gosselin, giving back has always been a way of life. Retired educators and dedicated monthly donors to both Jeneece Place and Q̓ʷalayu House, they are among the few who contribute to both of the Foundation’s Homes Away From Home.

Penny, a retired primary teacher, and Roger, a former middle school principal, built their lives around education and family. Raising their two sons in Powell River, they embraced outdoor adventures, sports, and the arts. Penny’s journey into teaching began at the University of British Columbia, where she discovered her passion for working with young children. Over the years, she found joy in the energy and curiosity of her kindergarten students.

Their connection to the Foundation’s mission began with Jeneece Place. Penny recalls the impact of learning about Jeneece Edroff’s vision to create a home away from home for families with children receiving medical care. “Jeneece Place immediately touched my heart,” she says. “My first impression was wonder—that a young person could make such a difference in the lives of families. A home away from home, a gift, during a time when a family needs comfort and care.”

The Gosselins’ decision to become donors was inspired by their own experience as parents. In 1984, their son Ryan contracted epiglottitis at 23 months old. He was intubated at the Powell River hospital and later airlifted to BC Children’s Hospital in Vancouver after developing pneumonia. Penny remembers the relief of having family in Vancouver, allowing her to stay with them.

“Imagining the added stress of finding somewhere for me to stay was horrifying. When we moved to Vancouver Island and heard of Jeneece Place, it opened a door for our family to give back.”

Their support started with Jeneece Place, but when Q̓ʷalayu House opened in Campbell River in 2021, they knew they wanted to extend their giving. Living in the community, they recognized the vital role Q̓ʷalayu House plays for families from the north Island who need an affordable and comforting place to stay while their children receive medical care.

For Penny and Roger, monthly giving is about sustainability. “It’s important to know what funds you can count on,” Penny explains. “Monthly donations provide that security.” They believe that their contributions help open doors, create opportunities, and build connections for families during some of the most challenging times of their lives.

The couple has had the opportunity to visit Q̓ʷalayu House several times.“ Each time, we were delighted to see the fabulous setting,” Penny says. “The children’s artwork was a highlight. Our second visit included a BBQ and the opportunity to chat with staff and other donors. We left with big smiles!”

Penny encourages others to consider supporting the Foundation, knowing how meaningful the impact can be. “A warm and caring place to be during a time when health needs are front and centre is paramount,” she says. “I hope others will join my family in giving to CHFVI. It will warm your heart, as it does ours.”

Thanks to donors like Penny and Roger, families across Vancouver Island have a place to turn when they need it most.
