HerWay Home celebrates 5th year anniversary
“I don’t have family or friends in my life. I’m pretty isolated, so having the program and support makes a difference. When I was first pregnant and then had my son, I was new to being in the world without drugs and alcohol. I always thought I was below others. I have been empowered by HerWay Home. I know that I have people to support me no matter what I do.” – HerWay Home participant
This year marks the 5th year of HerWay Home, which is a non-judgemental health and social resource for pregnant women and mother with young children or babies, who have a history with substance use and who may be affected by mental health issues, violence, and trauma.
Over the course of the past five years, HerWay Home has helped transform the lives of more than 200 women and their children.
“Our goal is to support women to have healthy births, decrease problematic substance use, and encourage positive connections between mothers and babies,” said Amanda Seymour, Coordinator, HerWay Home. “The respectful, women-centered services offered by HerWay can help reduce the number of babies born prenatally exposed to substances.”
Thanks to our generous donors, the Children’s Health Foundation of Vancouver Island is able to support innovative programs early on and be proactive in helping them get off the ground. The Foundation was brought into early discussions with the HerWay Home Program Planning Committee, and has since contributed more than $2.5 million in donor funds.
“We are grateful to our dedicated donors who make funding programs like HerWay Home possible. Thanks to their generous support, and through the success of HerWay Home, moms and their kids have new-found hope and a better chance at a healthier life,” said Veronica Carroll, CEO of Children’s Health Foundation of Vancouver Island.
